European alternatives to Typeform
Typeform is known for beautiful forms and surveys, but it's proprietary and cloud-only. European, open-source alternatives offer self-hosting and more data control.
Why look for an alternative?
Reasons include open source and self-hosting, data control, cost and a wish to collect feedback without depending on a proprietary cloud.
What to look for in an alternative
- Open source and/or self-hosting
- EU data storage
- Forms, surveys and logic
- Data-minimising collection (optional IP)

The top providers in detail
Formbricks is a privacy-first experience management and survey platform from Germany. It helps teams collect feedback across websites, apps and other touchpoints without relying entirely on proprietary US tools such as Typeform, SurveyMonkey or Qualtrics. Formbricks is open source, can be self-hosted and also offers a cloud version. The provider states SOC 2 Type II compliance and says ISO 27001 is in progress. For Euro Toolhub, Formbricks is interesting because it combines open-source transparency, self-hosting and clear privacy positioning.
Strengths
- Open source under AGPLv3 and self-hostable
- Cloud version and self-hosting available
- SOC 2 Type II stated by the provider
- Public DPA available
Weaknesses
- ISO 27001 is still in progress, not completed according to the provider
- Public subprocessor list was not clearly verified in this pass
- May be more powerful than needed for very simple forms
LimeSurvey is one of the best-known open-source survey platforms, developed since 2003 by LimeSurvey GmbH in Hamburg. It offers a very broad feature set for questionnaires, panels, branching logic, analysis and exports, suitable from simple surveys to academic research. The software is GPL-licensed and can be self-hosted for free; alternatively there is a hosted cloud with a selectable storage location – for EU customers the provider recommends Germany. This makes LimeSurvey a strong European alternative to Typeform, SurveyMonkey or Qualtrics, especially for organisations with privacy and data-residency requirements.
Strengths
- Very broad feature set for surveys and panels
- Open source (GPL) and free to self-host
- Cloud with selectable storage location, Germany recommended for the EU
- Established in research, public sector and business
Weaknesses
- Interface feels more technical in places than lightweight US tools
- Self-hosting requires operation and maintenance
- No publicly verified ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certification found
Nextcloud is the leading open-source alternative to cloud suites such as Google Workspace or Microsoft 365. Self-hosted or operated through a European provider, Nextcloud combines file sharing, calendar, contacts, video calls and office editing. Full data sovereignty is therefore central. The Community Edition (AGPLv3) is free for unlimited users – only the costs of your own server apply; Nextcloud Enterprise with support starts at around €69 per user per year (from 100 users).
Strengths
- Full data sovereignty through self-hosting
- Open source with a large app ecosystem
- Covers files, groupware and office
Weaknesses
- Self-hosting requires operation and maintenance
- Performance depends heavily on your own infrastructure
